Project 1: Exercises 1 Audio Dub & Sound Effects

In this lecture we learn the the types of sound elements that make up audio: Speech/ dialogue, sound effects, music. As well as the two types of sound effect, those being:

Hard Sound effects: Specific sounds that are added to a film to enhance a particular action or event, such as a door creaking, glass breaking, or a gunshot.

Ambient effects: Background noise in a film, such as traffic, wind, or crowd noise, that helps to create a sense of environment and atmosphere.

For this project we have to take take what we learnt in todays lecture and apply it to a video with no audio, adding our own speech/ dialogue and sound effects and ambient sound (music not required). We are given a scene from a film called Everything Everywhere All at Once for this project.

Project Task:

1. Place audio files on timeline and sync it with video.

2. Audio track:

  • 3 tracks for dialogue, one character, one track.
  • 4 tracks for sound effects,
  • 3 tracks for ambience sound.

3. Edit voice from female to male, male to female, human to cute animal/adult to kid: Premiere Pro → Audio Effects → Pitch Shifter → Semi tones.

4. Volume: Dialogue: between -6dB & -12dB, Ambience: below -20dB, Hard sound effects: Depend.)

The first part to this project we were split to a group of 5. We're then given the task of breaking down the dialogue, sound effects and ambient sounds, labeling the type of sound and time of audio, as well as linking the sound effects/ ambient sounds used in the video on the sheet breakdown.

Now with the sheet done, we can work individually and start editing our sounds. For starters I began by importing the clip to Premier Pro and then recording the dialogue on a recording website on my computer using a dedicated mic. I then placed the dialogue on the tracks, one for each character while trying to closely to match the flip sync to characters mouth.

Next in class we learnt how to add the pitch effect to our dialogue to fit the characters more. After this I went back and searched for more sound effects missing or better suited for the scene I wanted and began placing them in their tracks.

Here I added the ambience sound as well as decided to add suspense music, albeit wasn't necessary for this project. Even though I wanted to replicate the sound from the video as closely, so here I learnt how to add a fading effect to the music and the particularly the steam effect in the second last shot to slowly dissipate out in the scene as the sound effect was quite long and loud at the start and takes quite a while to quieten fast. I simply use the fade handles on the edge of the audio and drag them to where I wanted the sound to end.

Final Outcome

The only thing I felt I didn't get quite right was adjusting the different tracks to right volume, although I did adjust the ones that were either too loud of too soft, sometimes I might've adjusted them over the suggested dB. Overall I think the final outcome turned out quite nice and to my satisfaction.
